The ESP test cards were originally designed in the early 1930s by Dr. Karl Zener, a perceptual psychologist. In each deck, there are five sets of five images: a circle, a cross, three wavy parallel vertical lines, a square, and a five-pointed star. The theory behind the test is that because of their distinctness, there can be no ambiguity regarding any symbol. In a test, the cards are shuffled and the “receiver” tries to intuit the image the “sender” telepathically communicates.
